The Surrogacy Timeline: What to Expect From Start to Finish

Building a family through surrogacy is an extraordinary journey, one that requires patience, trust, and support at every step. While each path is unique, most surrogacy journeys follow a series of predictable stages. Understanding this timeline can help intended parents and surrogates feel more prepared, less overwhelmed, and more confident as they move forward.

At Cove Family Co., we believe in transparency. Here’s what you can expect from start to finish:

Step 1: Research & Choosing an Agency (1–2 months)

The journey often begins with research. Intended parents explore whether surrogacy is the right path, while potential surrogates consider if they meet requirements and feel ready. During this stage, families meet with organizations like Cove to ask questions, learn about costs, and decide on the right partner for their journey.

Step 2: Screening & Application (1–3 months)

Once you’ve chosen an agency, both surrogates and intended parents complete screenings. These include medical evaluations, background checks, psychological assessments, and detailed questionnaires. While this step takes time, it’s essential to ensure that everyone is ready and aligned for the journey ahead.

Step 3: Matching (1–3 months)

This is where the magic begins. Agencies work to thoughtfully match intended parents with surrogates based on preferences, values, and compatibility. Once a potential match is identified, both parties have the chance to meet (virtually or in person) before moving forward.

Step 4: Legal Agreements (1–2 months)

After a match is confirmed, attorneys draft contracts outlining roles, responsibilities, compensation, and expectations. These agreements are designed to protect both surrogates and intended parents. Every party has independent legal representation to ensure clarity and fairness.

Step 5: Medical Preparation & Embryo Transfer (1–2 months)

Surrogates begin medical protocols — including medications and monitoring — to prepare their bodies for an embryo transfer. Once the surrogate is ready, the embryo transfer takes place. A pregnancy test about 10–14 days later confirms if the transfer was successful. Because IVF success is not always straightforward, most surrogacy contracts will provide for up to three transfer attempts.

Step 6: Pregnancy (9 months)

Once pregnancy is achieved, the surrogate continues regular medical care, supported by both her family and the agency. Intended parents stay connected throughout the pregnancy, celebrating milestones and preparing for the baby’s arrival. Cove helps to coordinate communication, emotional support, and logistics along the way.

Step 7: Delivery & Legal Finalization (Hospital + 1–2 months)

When it’s time for delivery, the intended parents are usually present to welcome their child. Legal processes vary by state, but we will work closely with attorneys to ensure parental rights are properly established and finalized.

Step 8: Postpartum & Beyond (Ongoing)

The journey doesn’t end at delivery. Surrogates receive postpartum support, and intended parents transition into their new role with their baby. For many, the relationships formed through surrogacy — between parents, surrogates, and agencies — last well beyond the formal process.

The Big Picture

From first inquiry to holding a baby in your arms, the surrogacy journey can be a lengthy process. While timelines vary, having the right support system makes all the difference.

At Cove Family Co., we are here to guide, advocate, and celebrate with you every step of the way. Thinking about surrogacy? Contact Cove Family Co. to learn more about how we can walk this path together.
